Dr. Lee Poh Ching's Transformative Fellowship Experience in Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology at Zhejiang University School of Medicine

【Editor’s The Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine ZCH, renowned for its extensive experience in teaching and trning medical professionals including students, residents, and fellow physicians, offers an array of international programs designed to enhance pediatric expertise. Dr. Lee Poh Ching from Malaysia generously shares her transformative learning journey at ZCHa hospital serving more than 4 million patients annually with multidisciplinary care for over 1,800 children. As a Fellow in Subspecialty Trning in Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology PAG, she has the privilege to delve into the esteemed PAG center, bolstered by her childhood acquisition of Mandarin language skills which facilitates seamless integration.
Upon arrival in December 2023, Dr. Lee was welcomed with warmth and care by ZCH's dedicated team who provided comprehensive accommodation support. Under the guidance of Director Dr. SUN Liying and her outstanding colleagues, she immersed herself fully into an enriching clinical experience.
Dr. Lee engaged with a diverse group of medical professionals across specialties at ZCH, broadening her perspective through participation in the Specialty Excellence program in collaboration with Boston Children's Hospital. She was particularly fascinated by the multidisciplinary team managing children with disorders of sex development DSD, comprising experts in psychosocial care, pediatric ocrinology, gynecology, surgery, and genetics. Witnessing their cohesive teamwork provided her invaluable insights into managing rare cases.
In the field of childhood cancer, she admired the comprehensive care exted to patients by an inter-disciplinary team including oncology, surgery, radiology, and pathology experts. Her visits to accommodations for chronically ill child patients affirmed ZCH's commitment to holistic support for all stakeholders.
A highlight was presenting her experience with PAG trning in Malaysia at a forum hosted by FIJIG the Federation of International Junior Gynecologists, which encouraged international dialogue among colleagues. Dr. SUN Liying's open invitation for external PAG experts further enriched the discussions and perspectives shared during this interactive session.
Dr. Lee also ventured into community engagement, participating in FDMAS syndrome patient association meetings alongside her peers and learning from supportive networks. Her personal experience of Chinese culture immersion through visits to historical landmarks like Leifeng Pagoda and West Lake, as well as traditional festivities and gatherings with colleagues, enriched her understanding beyond professional domns.
Returning to her role as a student brought a sense of novelty to her career journey, allowing for an expansion of clinical wisdom alongside the development of invaluable friships. Dr. Lee's study experience in China has reinforced her belief that there is always room for growth and learning; she feels honored to share knowledge with peers and be part of their collective progress.
Lastly, Dr. Lee expresses heartfelt appreciation to Director SUN Liying and her inspiring team members at ZCH, as well as her new fris who have contributed significantly to her personal development.
