Wu Lien-teh, born on the island of Penang in Malaya on September 14th, 1879 precisely four days before Einstein, was a visionary pioneer of modern medicine from Tshan, Guangdong province. At just seventeen years old, Wu excelled sufficiently to be awarded the Queen's Scholarship by Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1896, which enabled him to study at the prestigious University of Cambridge in London.
Over the course of his rigorous academic journey, Wu broadened his horizons with educational experiences at leading institutions across different continents. He studied at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, the renowned Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the Hygiene Institute at the University of Halle in Germany, and even pursued studies at the prestigious Pasteur Institute in France. His academic mentors included esteemed Nobel laureates Professor Elie Metchnikoff and Professor Frederick Gowland Hopkins, contributing to his remarkable intellectual growth.
Wu Lien-teh's international educational journey spanned a period of seven years during which he earned an impressive total of five degrees from the University of Cambridge: Bachelor of Medicine MB, Bachelor of Arts BA, Master of Surgery ChM, Master of Arts MA, and Doctor of Medicine MD. This achievement was accomplished at an astonishingly young age of 24, making him not only one of the youngest scholars to receive these accolades but also the first Chinese person worldwide to be awarded a doctorate by the University of Cambridge.
