Honoring Women in Children's Health Research with the George E. Batchelor Awards
The Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami recently celebrated groundbreaking discoveries by recognizing three outstanding female physician-scientists through its annual Batchelor Awards for Excellence in Children’s Health Research. Established by entrepreneur and philanthropist George E. Batchelor, these prestigious awards have been designed to support researchers who are pushing the boundaries of knowledge in pediatric illnesses.
Dr. Karen C. Young, recipient of the Micah Batchelor Award, is a neonatologist with a focus on understanding how molecular and cellular processes influence othelial dysfunction in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia BPD and pulmonary hypertension. By studying this critical area, her research elucidate pathways that underpin the disease's progression and provide new insights for potential therapies.
Dr. Dnelys Garcia, awarded as a Micah Batchelor Fellow, is dedicated to improving outcomes for children with head injuries who require care but are not always given it due to accessibility issues. Her work seeks to identify and develop interventions that ensure these children receive the necessary support for positive long-term outcomes.
Dr. Chryso Pefkaros Katsoufis, a pediatric nephrologist, was honored as another Micah Batchelor Fellow recipient. With her clinical research focusing on congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract, she is committed to uncovering how these conditions contribute to the development of adult diseases during childhood.
Glen Flores, Chr of the Department of Pediatrics, highlighted the significance of such awards in advancing medical knowledge and improving care for children with chronic illnesses. The recognition of Drs. Young, Garcia, Katsoufis, alongside previous recipients, underscores the profound impact of their work.
George E. Batchelor, founder of the Batchelor Foundation, envisioned these awards to not only acknowledge but also accelerate scientific progress in pediatric health, ming for a future where children's lives are positively transformed through groundbreaking research.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS:
-
Dr. Karen C. Young: Investigating othelial dysfunction in preterm infants with BPD and pulmonary hypertension.
-
Dr. Dnelys Garcia: Enhancing care for children with head injuries by improving access to necessary treatments.
-
Dr. Chryso Pefkaros Katsoufis: Examining the developmental origins of adult diseases related to kidney and urinary tract anomalies in children.
This year's Batchelor Awards are a testament to the dedication and innovative spirit driving advancements in pediatric health research, with each awardee contributing uniquely to their respective fields.
