National Academy of Medicine
History and Mission
Founded in 1970 as the Institute of Medicine IOM, the National Academy of Medicine NAM is one of three prestigious academies that form the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, located within the United States. The NAM boasts a distinguished membership base exceeding 2,400 individuals elected by their peers in acknowledgment of their exceptional accomplishments in professional fields. Through dedicated volunteer service, these members contribute to the work and mission of the National Academy of Medicine and the broader National Academies. Operating under the charter established by Congress in 1863 for the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academies are private, non-profit institutions that function outside governmental structures to provide unbiased counsel on matters pertning to science, technology, and health.
