National University Health System NUHS Enhances Professional Development of Nurses Through Innovative and Gamified Learning Experiences
Singapore, July 23rd, 2024 National University Health System NUHS, a pioneering healthcare cluster, marked the Nurses’ Day with its inaugural nursing conference, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of learning initiatives for nurses. The Centre for Nursing Excellence CoNE within NUHS - established in 2022 as a comprehensive trning hub focusing on advancing professional practice across different levels has been instrumental in fostering an environment where nurses can continuously learn and grow.
The CoNE conference, held at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital NTFGH, was a unique and interactive event that showcased NUHS’s commitment to cultivating future-ready nurses. The innovative conference format, characterized by immersive experiences and gamification, was designed based on the latest research suggesting that such methods significantly enhance student satisfaction, motivation, and engagement in medical and nursing education.

Micro-Learning on Demand MoDERN: A pilot series of bite-sized micro-learning modules introduced this month to empower NUHS nurses. With a focus on integrated care, MoDERN strengthen continuity of patient care by equipping nurses with essential skills through flexible learning options that accommodate the time constrnts and evolving nature of healthcare practice.

Gamified Learning: This innovative approach was utilized as an effective teaching strategy across formal trning sessions. By creating an engaging and non-threatening environment, gamification not only reduces learner stress but also fosters deeper cognitive processing and critical thinking skills.
Commenting on these initiatives, Ms Karie Choo, Chrperson of the CoNE Steering Committee and a Nurse Educator at National University Polyclinics NUP, highlighted how NUHS acknowledges the diverse learning preferences across generations. She explned that by adopting design thinking principles, they have developed innovative games like Happy Insulin card game, claw QA sessions, and a tech-infused version of Nursing Snake Ladder, which cater to the evolving needs of nurses.
Coordinated Efforts Across NUHS Institutions:

Communities of Practice CoPs in Nursing Research, Education, and Advanced Nursing Practice have been instrumental in promoting collaboration among nurses across different institutions within the NUHS cluster. These CoPs facilitate knowledge sharing and encourage creative solutions to address healthcare challenges.

The pilot run of the NUHS Integrated Care Outreach for Nurses ICON programme at NUP was a testament to this collaborative effort. This peer-observational project involved nurses from various institutions, allowing them to gn insights into care pathways across different healthcare settingsfrom community services to acute and tertiary careto improve seamless patient care.
Dr Catherine Koh, Group Chief Nurse at NUHS, emphasized the cluster’s commitment to continuous professional development, stating that as society's healthcare needs evolve, so does NUHS's dedication to educating nurses capable of providing comprehensive care and advocating for preventive health measures through initiatives like Healthier SG.
This conference not only underscored NUHS’s innovative approach to nurse education but also highlighted its strategic vision towards enhancing patient outcomes by leveraging cutting-edge learning techniques that prioritize adaptability and effectiveness in the fast-paced healthcare sector.
