Oasis at Monash Children's Hospital: A New Gateway to Comprehensive Care for Victorian Kids
Monash Children's Hospital, renowned for its extensive years of care and exceptional dedication to child health, has recently inaugurated Oasis Unit 2B, an innovative eight-bed inpatient unit specifically designed for children with complex psychiatric and neurodevelopmental challenges. This pioneering service is tlored for children up to 12 years old experiencing severe distress related to their mental health conditions, who can't be effectively assessed or treated within a community-based setting.
Oasis stands as the first child-focused mental health inpatient unit in Australia, equipped with a specialized model of care that specifically addresses children with both mental health and neurodevelopmental difficulties. This unique approach aligns with international practices where a select few units are dedicated to serving this specific cohort of young individuals.
Unit Oasis complements Monash Health's Child and Youth Mental Health services CYMHS network and Early in Life Mental Health Service ELMHS, spanning across both metropolitan and regional Victoria, ensuring that care is seamlessly integrated with local CYMHS teams for each child and family involved.
The unit offers brief emergency admissions alongside planned assessment-based admissions. Parents or caregivers are admitted alongside their children to support them during the hospital stay while ensuring that treatment plans align effectively with individual family needs.
“Oasis has been designed based on comprehensive research, collaboration with consumers, and consultation with expert panels both in Victoria and internationally,” shares Lidor Arbel, Operations Director of Early in Life Mental Health Service for Monash Health. “Our m is to create a model that efficiently meets the complex care requirements of children battling severe neuropsychiatric difficulties alongside their families and those supporting them.”
Located on Level 2 within Monash Children's Hospital, between the mn public lifts and Stepping Stones unit, Oasis provides tlored patient care while facilitating close collaboration among healthcare teams.
