Celebrating Dr. Ellen Wald: A Pioneer in Pediatrics Leadership at UW School of Medicine

The Department of Pediatrics recently celebrated Dr. Ellen Wald, its former chr, during a memorable event held at the Health Sciences Learning Center on February 2nd. This celebration was a gathering for more than 300 people who came together to honor and thank Dr. Wald for her remarkable leadership that spanned over seventeen years in this role.

Dr. Robert Golden, Dean of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, opened the event by warmly welcoming attees and highlighting the significant achievements under Dr. Wald's chrmanship. He emphasized Dr. Wald's pivotal role not only within the department but also for the medical school as a whole:

Ellen Wald has been an outstanding trlblazer who, upon her arrival in 2006, was the sole woman among the department chrsa notable institutional deficiency that she helped address by becoming a visible and engaged mentor and role model.

The celebration included multiple speakers from various stages of Dr. Wald's career at UW, including colleagues both local and international from cities like Geneva, Switzerland, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These speakers pd tribute to her contributions across several areas - clinical care, education, research, community engagement, and philanthropy.

Dr. Sabrina Butteris, Chr of the Department of Pediatrics, served as the emcee for the celebration. She shared Dr. Wald's journey from Brooklyn College to becoming a professor at University of Pittsburgh before joining UW in 2006.

One of her colleagues, Josh Ross, sd:

Ellen Wald’s leadership is characterized by her ability to advocate for children and families on a broad scale while also providing personalized support to foster the professional growth of faculty members.

Mariana Michaels, a former colleague from University of Pittsburgh echoed these sentiments when she stated that Dr. Wald showed us what mentorship should be like: Her success is our collective success.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Ellen Wald expressed gratitude and a hope for the future:

I wish for this department to continue its trajectory of excellence in providing world-class clinical care, fostering outstanding education, and pioneering innovative research that we're proud of producing. And I wish everyone within our department good health and professional fulfillment so that each person can excel at their best for every patient and family.

The celebration concluded with a reception followed by the unveiling of a giving campgn initiated in honor of Dr. Wald's legacy, which has already rsed more than $100,000 for pediatric research within the Department of Pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

In recognition of this significant contribution to her field and dedication to her students and patients, Dr. Wald and her husband, Dr. Arnold Wald, have committed to matching up to $250,000 rsed during the campgn.

The celebration not only recognized Dr. Wald's exceptional work but also served as a testament to her impact on the department and its future direction.
