Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia CHOP, the first hospital solely dedicated to pediatric care in America, opened its doors in 1855. Founded by visionary leadersFrancis West Lewis, MD; T. Hewson Bache, MD; and R.A.F. Penrose, MDthe institution was established with a singular purpose: to discover cures for illnesses specific to children.

• Innovative Research: Inaugurated in 1922, our research center has grown into one of the nation's largest pediatric research facilities, boasting more than 638,000 square feet and over 1,100 principal investigators dedicated to cutting-edge discoveries.

• Advancements in Care: Since inception, CHOP has been at the forefront of developing new treatments and procedures for children with various conditions. Our commitment to patient-centered care ensures that every innovation is driven by our mission to enhance quality, safety, and outcomes.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Leader

Originally founded as Pennsylvania Hospital for Children, we've grown exponentially since those modest roots. Today, CHOP stands as one of the world's largest pediatric hospitals:

• Annual Admissions: With 33,000+ hospital admissions annually.

• Patient Visits: Over 1.5 million visits from patients and families each year.

Our footprint has expanded well beyond our Philadelphia campus. We've created a network of care that includes two new facilities specifically dedicated to mental health services and more than 100 community programs empowering healthier communities across the region.

On the Horizon

As we look ahead, CHOP is committed to leveraging innovation and collaboration for a brighter future:

• Morgan Center for Research: Set to open in 2025, this facility will offer 350,000+ square feet of research space, including 120 wet bench labs on Schuylkill Ave.

• Patient Tower: Scheduled for completion in 2028, the new tower will feature hundreds of private inpatient rooms and enhanced diagnostic spaces at our mn campus.
