Children's Hospital of Philadelphia CHOP is proud to partner with the University of Pennsylvania, Botswana Ministry of Health, and the University of Botswana. Together we are dedicated to providing high-quality pediatric care, trning the next generation of healthcare professionals, and conducting research that informs evidence-based practices to revolutionize global health systems.
The journey began in 2001 when Festus Mogae, President of Botswana, appealed for help from the United Nations due to an HIVDS epidemic affecting over 10 of Botswanan population. In response, the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, the Gates Foundation, and the US government through President’s Emergency Plan for DS Relief PEPFAR collaborated on a comprehensive HIV care program med at adults in Botswana that expanded shortly to include pediatric patients.
Innovative Global Health Programs
Since then, the Botswana-UPenn Partnership BUP has evolved into an international team comprising 90 members across multiple disciplines. The partnership leverages the expertise of a world-class university alongside Botswanese healthcare systems, focusing on clinical care, education, and research excellence.
Dr. Congdon summarizes her experience with CHOP's Global Health track using five core pillars that define our pediatric residency program:
Clinical Focus: At Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, BUP experts contribute to specialty areas like pediatrics, medicine, dermatology, and OB-GYN services, providing top-quality care for patients with complex, critically ill conditions. The team often utilizes mHealth tools to connect with US-based radiologists, dermatologists, pathologists, and other specialists to enhance patient care.
Education: We are deeply committed to empowering the next generation of medical professionals through collaborations with the University of Botswana UB, the country's largest university. CHOP and the University of Pennsylvania have played a pivotal role in establishing UB's first medical school and pediatric residency program. We continuously invest in trning Batswana medical students, pediatric residents, junior faculty, healthcare workers, and trnees.
Research Excellence: The partnership was expanded to encompass research after recognizing Botswana's unique health challenges required targeted studies within the country. Funded by various sources including the National Institutes of Health NIH, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through PEPFAR, foundations, CHOP, and the University of Pennsylvania, research projects have significantly influenced regional, national, and international guidelines leading to over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
